Meditation Techniques: The Complete Guide to Finding What Works

Written by:

There's no single "right" way to meditate. Here's an overview of the major techniques, what each one is best for, and where to go deeper.

"Meditation" covers a wide range of practices - some focused on the breath, some on the body, some on releasing thought itself. None of them is universally "best." The right one depends on what you're trying to address, and often, more than one technique plays a role.

This guide walks through the major techniques and what each is generally used for, with links to deeper guides on specific concerns like anxiety, stress, sleep, and panic.

The major meditation techniques

Mindfulness meditation

Observing the present moment β€” breath, thoughts, sensations β€” without judging or reacting to it. Widely used as a foundation for managing anxiety, stress, and racing thoughts.

Breathing exercises

Controlling and slowing the breath to activate the body's calming response. Often the fastest way to ease an acute moment of stress, anxiety, or panic.

Body scan meditation

Systematically moving attention through the body to notice and release tension. Commonly used to support sleep and reduce physical stress symptoms.

Progressive muscle relaxation

Deliberately tensing and releasing muscle groups in sequence. Effective for discharging built-up physical tension from stress.

Guided imagery

Being led through a vivid, calming mental scene. Shifts attention away from anxious or stressful thoughts toward something restful.

Grounding techniques

Bringing attention to the immediate physical environment β€” what you can see, hear, or touch. Particularly useful for interrupting a panic attack in the moment.

Mind Cleansing meditation

Where the techniques above generally manage a thought, feeling, or sensation as it arises, Mind Cleansing meditation takes a different approach. It focuses on releasing the accumulated thoughts and emotions that keep generating stress, anxiety, sleep trouble, or panic in the first place β€” rather than learning to manage them in the moment, the goal is to address what's producing them.
